The Centre is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that is established with
the
sole aim of researching and engaging in programmes and activities designed to address
the menace of out of school children including the almajiri child who are not enrolled
in any formal school and have become perpetual nuisance on our streets in most cities
and towns of northern states of Nigeria. The Centre is established to participate in the
collective national effort to curb the serious problem of the growing population of the
out of school children in our societies across Nigeria.
The Centre will among other things also come up with practical solutions to ameliorate
the out of school children roaming around the streets hawking, begging for alms and
engaging in illicit activities. The danger of having this large number of children
roaming the streets and hanging out at traffic junctions is very well known. They pose
serious security threat and can be subjected to all manner of abuse that will render
them physically and emotionally drained and not useful to themselves and to the society.
The Centre is engaged in the research to get accurate data of the out of school children
and to find practical approaches to curbing the menace. The Centre has identified and
registered reasonable number of the OOSC who are currently enrolled into schools and
provided with uniforms and books, as well daily feeding regime. At the same time, the
Centre is currently engaged in enlightenment programmes with the parents as target with
a view to educate them on the implications of leaving out their children on the streets
without care and education. The Centre also collaborates with relevant government
agencies, local and international non-governmental organizations to engage in advocacy
programmes, conception of policies and activities conceived to reduce this menace to the
barest minimum.
